I love TV and have been the “go-to” friend anytime someone wants to commune over a show, so when brainstorming topics this was a must!
In honour of International Women’s Day, I’ve decided to choose 5 Netflix shows with strong women leads or influences. These are in no particular order and are all excellent shows that are strong contenders in their own genres.
1. Orange Is The New Black
Following the lives of inmates in an all women’s prison, this has been a show that’s had me hooked from the very beginning. It’s no secret that older generations were taught not to bring attention to social issues such as what went on in prisons so this show, even though fiction was able to open up people’s minds in a very creative way. The characters are all strong, determined, and beautifully flawed.
2. The Crown
Based on the life of Queen Elizabeth II The Crown follows her reign, marriage, and family. The series starts with her as a young woman and will finish with her passing (which is very morbid lol, but accurate). So far 2 stages of her life have been portrayed and the level of detail that goes into each episode is phenomenal. We already knew the Queen was a Boss B*itch but to most, she seemed immortal or untouchable and the series humanized her and made her much more relatable.
3. Gilmore Girls
Gilmore Girls follow a mother-daughter duo who are polar opposites but share a bond that is undeniably one of the most convincing on-screen relationships I’ve seen thus far. They are witty, lovable, and it doesn’t take more than a couple of episodes to get addicted to this comedy-drama. They make it on my shortlist for more reasons than one, but the biggest one was their fearless independence.
Homeland is a suspenseful drama that is female lead by CIA operative Carrie Mathison. I will admit I haven’t seen the last 2 seasons (due to lack of time, not interest) but what caught my eye with the first 5 seasons of this series was one of the underlying motives in the show which were mental health issues, not only of someone that serves their country but a woman. You watch her navigate and kick ass in a career that’s male-dominated, but you also watch her as a mother and sister who is trying to balance life while being bi-polar.
I have to admit it was a toss-up for me between Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. However, a show that’s based around a woman that puts out fires for a living and does it with such grace and ease deserves to take the top 5. Olivia Pope emulates strength, intelligence, beauty, and flaws. Even though the men also hold their own in this series the strong women lead cast takes the show to a level of girl power that will not be ignored.
Even though it’s not necessarily on the millennial radar it’s a binge-worthy show about a widower that sees a market dealing Marijuana to the people in her community and comes across some issues as she grows her hustle. It’s dark, it’s funny, and it shows the survivor side of single moms.
If you haven’t watched these shows. You totally should, they are all fantastic. And if you know of other shows that we can add to our list, please share them with us in the comments below – because you know I will watch them!
