Lisa, whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing since I was in elementary school (yes, I know the age, and no I’m not telling 😝)has always been thoughtful, kind, and strong-willed in standing up for what she felt was right.
Why is she an inspiration to me?
There are many reasons why Lisa would be an inspiration to anyone, really. Personally, for me, it’s her light, laughter, and ability to connect people. She’s one of the few people I know that brings such a positive energy force into a room that there is no denying you’re in good company. Fiercely independent with a degree in Human Kinetics, our inspirational woman of the week is Lisa!
What is your biggest accomplishment thus far and why?
At first, when I looked at this question, I thought about the house I bought, the degrees, living overseas and all of those different accolades. However, looking a little deeper within myself, I realized that my biggest accomplishment is when I stopped lying to myself and began to keep it real about everything in my life.
Looking back on your life thus far, is there anything you regret?
Nope, everything that has happened in my life from the good, the bad and the ugly was supposed to happen. Therefore, I regret nothing.
What is the best piece of advice you could give another woman?
This may seem cliche; however, I would say unconditionally, unapologetically and boldly love yourself first. That would be my most significant piece of advice because nothing really fell into place until I was able to do that for myself.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
This question gives me mixed feelings of slight anxiety mixed with excitement as I don’t honestly know; however, all I can do is have a plan, right?! I see myself in a serious relationship, maybe married with another 20 countries travelled under my belt and a least one child.
What is the best piece of advice given to you?
It was one summer day LOL, and my Bajan ( from Barbados) grandmother looked at me and said: “ If yuh can’t tek one, tek all.” Even though the subject matter she was talking about was absolutely ridiculous, I applied it in the same notion as “all or nothing.” To this very day, everything I do is full out and never half-assed.
What do you think stops a woman or yourself from putting herself first?
I believe sometimes societal pressures and gender role ideals put a lot of strain on women, therefore, making her needs and wants fall behind. Nothing makes me happier than when I see that mother, wife, caregiver or provider in a woman finally realize that as much as she is all of those titles … she was “HERself” first.
What three words could be used to describe you?
Three words that can be used to describe me are genuine, determine, and family-oriented. With me, it’s really what you see is what you get, if you’re friends with me, I am friends with you until the end. The determination factor comes from a constant uphill battle with this lovely thing we call life and never giving up until getting the desired result. My family is everything to me, and I couldn’t imagine my life without each of them.
